Atletico Madrid's Marcos Llorente Hints at Early Retirement After Barcelona Victory

Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente, aged 31, has for the second time in recent weeks hinted at a potential early end to his professional career. The player admitted he has no desire to prolong his footballing activity beyond what he deems necessary.

Llorente recently stated on social media, answering fan questions on Instagram, that "the day will come when football will no longer be rewarding for me, and it will happen sooner rather than later." These words sparked extensive discussion about his future. This was part of a broader response detailing the mental and physical toll elite athletes endure. Currently, his contract with Atletico runs until 2027, leaving less than 18 months until its expiration.

Llorente Hints at Retirement Again

Following Atletico's progression to the Copa del Rey final, after a thrilling 4-3 aggregate victory over Barcelona, Llorente was once again asked about his recent comments. He told Diario AS:

"I am getting older, and I am sure I won't be someone forced into retirement by my body. Before then, everything about football will cease to be worthwhile for me. Football isn't a healthy pursuit; it's about performance, which is not the same as health. Extreme physical stress, constant travel, media pressure, frequent micro-injuries, disrupted circadian rhythms… Not to mention the regular need for painkillers just to be able to play. This isn't designed to optimize longevity, but to win."

He added: "Everyone has their own preferences, their own economic needs for happiness, their own levels of achieving professional goals, and I think that, without a doubt, sooner rather than later, that will come to me. Before my body forces me to retire."

Marcos Llorente, known for his commitment to a healthy lifestyle, at 31 years old, might be considered a player ending his career relatively early by modern standards. While this was common two decades ago, today most players continue to play into their mid-to-late thirties. Advances in sports science, physical conditioning, and recovery have allowed athletes to extend their careers beyond the norm.

Since his €30 million transfer from Real Madrid in 2019, Llorente has been one of Diego Simeone's most trusted players. Initially deployed as a defensive midfielder, he later became an attacking threat, making runs into the box, and after Kieran Trippier's departure, often played as a right-back. In total, he has made 286 appearances for Atletico, scoring 35 goals and providing 43 assists.
